Finishing Well

Success has more to do with outcomes I’m in charge of, while significance has more to do with outcomes beyond my control.

 

This book challenges retirees to move from success to significance.  In many ways retirees are in the prime of their lives.  The mind has moved from knowledge to wisdom, the emotions become more trusted, the soul yearns to find God’s purpose, and even the physical body can even be rejuvenated through wise exercise.

“I think there is a stage beyond significance, and that is surrender.”  (Henry Nouwen)  He also went on to say that he didn’t think most people could make it from success to surrender in one step, because they’d be too angry about what they lost.  “What I’ve concluded,” I continued, “is that there are really four steps in the process…
