We cannot donate away poverty.

Paul Polak has spent years practicing what this book preaches.  His ideas are different, require more effort than fund raising, and really work.   Ridding the world of poverty can only be done by encouraging and empowering the poor who are willing to work their way out.  This book offers a pretty good case for the multi-faceted impact of increased income in the lives of the poor.  (He defines “poor” as living on one to two dollars per day.)

To move out of poverty, poor people have to invest their own time and money.  The way out of poverty is to release third-world entrepreneurs.  Understanding a complex problem, like poverty, requires an understanding of each of its root causes and their web of interaction.  But finding a solution is more like looking for the simplest single lever that will give the greatest results.  The most effective way to increases incomes of poor people is to…
